Red Elephants & Lava Flows

Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights Price: $950 per person

Day 1: Arrival in Tsavo

  • Morning: Depart from Nairobi early in the morning by road. The journey to Tsavo offers picturesque views and a chance to see rural Kenyan life.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at your lodge in Tsavo East National Park, known for its large herds of red elephants, so-called because of the red dust they bathe in. After lunch, embark on your first game drive to see these elephants and other wildlife such as lions and leopards.
  • Evening: Return to the lodge for dinner. Spend your evening relaxing, possibly with views of the park and its inhabitants.

Day 2: Explore Tsavo East

  • Morning to Evening: After breakfast, spend a full day on game drives around Tsavo East. Visit the Lugard Falls, and the Aruba Dam, a popular gathering place for animals, especially during dry periods. Enjoy a picnic lunch in one of the park’s scenic spots.
  • Evening: After a day of exploration, head back to the lodge for dinner. Optionally, attend a star-gazing session, as Tsavo’s clear skies offer excellent night-sky visibility.

Day 3: Tsavo West and the Shetani Lava Flow

  • Morning: Post breakfast, transfer to Tsavo West National Park. Begin exploring the different landscape, marked by volcanic activity, including the Shetani Lava Flow, an expanse of black lava spread across the savannah.
  • Afternoon: After lunch at your new lodge, visit the Mzima Springs, a series of natural springs with underwater viewing hides for observing fish and hippos.
  • Evening: Take an evening game drive in Tsavo West, hoping to spot rhinos and other wildlife. Return to your lodge for dinner.

Day 4: Morning Game Drive and Departure

  • Early Morning: Take an early morning game drive, which provides one last opportunity to watch the wildlife in action as the park awakens.
  • Mid-Morning: Return to the lodge for breakfast and then check out.
  • Late Morning: Depart Tsavo, heading back to Nairobi with memories of the vast landscapes and vibrant wildlife of both Tsavo East and West.
