Day 1: Transfer to Mount Kenya

  • Morning: Depart from Nairobi early in the morning and drive to the Mount Kenya region. Arrive at the park gate where you meet your guides and porters.
  • Afternoon: Begin your trek at the Sirimon Gate, gradually ascending through montane forest, bamboo, and giant heather zones to Old Moses Camp for your first night.
  • Evening: Have dinner at the camp and get a briefing from your guides about the trekking route. Early night for a good rest before the next day’s climb.

Day 2: Trek to Shipton’s Camp

  • Morning to Afternoon: After breakfast, continue the trek to Shipton’s Camp. The trail passes through fascinating moorlands and offers views of the main peaks. The trek takes approximately 6-7 hours. Lunch en route.
  • Evening: Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Camp, located at the base of the high peaks. Prepare for an early morning start to attempt the summit.

Day 3: Summit Day to Point Lenana

  • Very Early Morning: Wake up around 2 AM and begin the trek to Point Lenana, the third highest peak of Mount Kenya. The goal is to reach the summit around sunrise to witness the spectacular views and possibly see the shadow of the mountain cast over the clouds.
  • Morning to Afternoon: After spending some time at the summit, descend back to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast, then further down to Mackinder’s Camp for lunch and rest.
  • Evening: Dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s Camp. Reflect on the day’s achievements.

Day 4: Extra Day for Exploration

  • Morning: Utilize this day for a gentle walk in the area, exploring the unique flora and fauna of the alpine and sub-alpine zones of Mount Kenya. This day also serves as a buffer for any weather-related delays that may have occurred during the summit attempt.
  • Afternoon to Evening: Return to Mackinder’s Camp for lunch and spend another night here. This provides additional time for acclimatization and relaxation after the summit climb.

Day 5: Descent to Base

  • Morning to Afternoon: After breakfast, begin your descent through the moorlands and forests to the park gate. The descent is less strenuous and allows for enjoyment of the diverse landscapes and ecosystems of Mount Kenya.
  • Evening: Transfer from the park gate to a nearby lodge where you can shower, enjoy a well-earned dinner, and relax in comfortable beds.

Day 6: Return to Nairobi

  • Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the lodge.
  • Midday: Check out and embark on the drive back to Nairobi. Arrive in the afternoon with plenty of time to reflect on your adventure or prepare for your onward journey.
